LGBTQ Family Therapist in St Paul MN – Caring Support for Kids, Teens, and Families

Welcome! I’m Shawny Sena, a LGBTQ family therapist in St Paul MN, and I’m so glad you’re here. I work with kids, teens, and families who are part of the LGBTQ community, offering kind, creative, and affirming support. Whether you’re looking for a space to talk, grow, or just feel understood, I’m here to help.

Families today face lots of changes and challenges—but you don’t have to go through them alone. As a family therapist, my goal is to support your whole family with care that truly fits who you are.

Therapy for LGBTQ Families in St Paul MN

Every family is different—and that’s something to celebrate! As a LGBTQ family therapist in St Paul MN, I specialize in working with LGBTQ families, including LGBTQ parents, LGBTQ children, and parents of transgender children.

Sometimes families come to therapy during a big life change. Other times, they’re dealing with stress, questions, or strong emotions. No matter what brings you in, I’ll meet you where you are, with respect and compassion.

Whether you want to work together as a family or one-on-one, I offer a warm and welcoming space to be your full self.

Helping LGBTQ Children and Teens Feel Safe and Strong

Growing up can be confusing. For LGBTQ children and LGBTQ teens, it can sometimes feel scary or lonely to talk about identity, feelings, or the changes happening in their lives.

As a LGBTQ child therapist and LGBTQ family therapist in St Paul MN, I help kids express themselves in ways that feel natural. We might play games, draw pictures, or just talk—it depends on what helps your child feel comfortable. I use play therapy with younger children to help them explore big feelings in small, manageable ways.

For older kids and LGBTQ teens, we build trust and talk about things that matter—like identity, friendships, family, or school stress. I’m also experienced as a therapist for trans children, helping them feel confident and supported as they explore who they are.

Supporting Parents of LGBTQ Kids and Trans Children

If you're a parent, it’s okay to have questions. It's okay to be unsure. What matters most is that you care—and that you’re trying.

As a therapist for parents, I work with caregivers who want to support their LGBTQ or transgender children, but aren’t always sure how. You might be wondering how to talk about identity, how to support your child at school, or how to handle your own emotions during this journey. I offer a space just for you—to talk, ask questions, and feel supported.

Whether you're a parent of a teenager, a younger child, or just trying to do your best, I’m here to help you feel more connected and confident.

Therapy That Works for Your Whole Family

I know that no one-size-fits-all approach works for every family. That’s why I offer therapy that fits you. As a LGBTQ family therapist in St Paul MN and marriage therapist, I help families build better communication, work through conflict, and strengthen their relationships.

You can come in for:

  • One-on-one sessions for kids and teens

  • Parent support sessions

  • Family therapy for everyone together

  • Marriage therapy for couples

My job isn’t to tell you how to live—it’s to help you live together in a way that feels honest, loving, and peaceful.

Hi, I’m Shawny

Here’s what I promise to bring to our work:

Authenticity.

Cheesiness.

Listening with my whole spirit.

A big laugh.

Deep questions. Like, really deep.

The courage to go there, wherever your there is.

An eye for context. Physical, emotional, financial, historical, political.

A commitment to undoing the legacy of white supremacy in my body.

A challenge when you need it.

A refuge when you don’t.

Presence, not pathology.

Healing is a gift for yourself and your community.

I’d love to help you get there.
